Welcome to the Department of English!

Welcome to the home page of the Department of English at the University of Connecticut. With nearly 60 full-time faculty at Storrs and the regional campuses, more than 600 undergraduate majors, and approximately 120 graduate students, English is one of the largest and most vibrant departments at UConn. We are proud of the breadth and excellence of our programs, which include concentrations in Irish Studies, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric and Composition.

The Department mission reinforces our commitment to informing our majors about literature and literary history and to helping them to develop the writing and critical thinking skills required for literary interpretation. English Department Faculty also participate regularly in courses offered by the Honors Program, the Department of African American Studies, the Institute for Asian American Studies, the Puerto Rican and Latino Studies Institute, and the Women's Studies Institute.

The Department sponsors lectures by visiting speakers as well as readings in poetry and fiction. Recent readers, for example, have included Fay Weldon, Gjertrud Schnackenberg, Frank McCourt, Eavan Boland, and Lynn McMahon. The Department also offers regular colloquia and seminars on scholarly and pedagogical topics. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for the Department's London Program (see Affiliated programs) as well as Study Abroad Programs throughout the world.
